Complex Plitvice Lakes are situated between the mountains of Mala Kapela in the west and in the east Pljesivice, and belong to the Dinaric system. The total area is 29,685 hectares, and the average altitude is 600 m. Plitvice lakes are unusual karst phenomena and have been declared a national park in 1949. It represents a forested mountain area in which there are 16 lakes of various sizes that descend into each other, and are filled with crystal blue water that comes from numerous rivers and streams. Plitvice Lakes National Park is open year round to visitors. Zone tour is spread mostly by lakes and waterfalls, and visitors have access to the mountain, and two educational paths.
